Day 4

Our Final Day
Those from Denver and Utah had an earlier flight. Joann, Jay and I met up for breakfast at 8:30 a.m. at La Isla because we wanted to eat in an open air restaurant on our last day. Jay and I shared some waffles and then ordered Eggs Benedict because both sounded yummy! Afterwards, we called the Bell Boy and put our luggage outside my room for pick up. We then went to Jo Jo's for a final drink before departing. I had something with Kahlua and coconut.

When we got to the lobby, our luggage was not there yet. The Bell Boy took off in a golf cart to get it and the Funjet shuttle arrived. Luckily, they get there early enough. He finally retrieved our luggage.

When we were dropped off at the airport, we were approached by another Funjet Rep who whisked us to the front of the long check-in line. That was quite impressive (even though we were getting dirty looks).

United Flight
This was one of the most pleasant flights I've ever been on. The crew was very friendly and informative.

The man sitting next to me ordered a snack pack and when he opened it up, he asked, "Is this what Americans eat?"...."This is like the food astronauts take to the moon!" I asked him where he was from and he said they were from Switzerland. I assured him that wasn't our normal food, just airline food.

I finished my book, "Forever In Blue...The Fourth Summer of the Sisterhood."

Joann only brought a carry-on, so she was out right away. Jay had a two hour layover before going to Kansas City.

Marriott Suites Parking
While I always park at the Marriott Suites, this time I was really frustrated. When I got to the ticket window, there was no one there, and I heard something saying to insert my ticket. I had to back up a little and when I inserted my ticket, it said that I owed $96.00. I booked online and was only supposed to pay $30.00. I pressed the call button and a rude person answered. When I explained my situation, she told me that I had to come in to pay. I told her that I couldn't because there was a shuttle behind me and the gate wouldn't open. She kept insisting and repeating herself and the information was all jumbled and not very clear (so much for technology replacing human jobs!). Finally, after about 5 minutes, the shuttle backed up some and I backed up, but had to pull forward to go backwards again to get out of my predicament, but the shuttle was so impatient, he almost sideswiped my whole car trying to squeeze by instead of waiting.

I was so annoyed when I went in and I asked to speak to a manager and "Mabel," the same girl I spoke to on the intercom, said that she was it! She was not very customer focused, so I asked for the General Manager's business card. I told them that there are other places to park and that I will park there in the future. It used to be a simple and efficient process, but it no longer is and it was not a positive experience. Why would I think that anything changed since December when I parked there last? Argggh! Welcome home, right?!!!

Karisma Hotels
I can't stop talking about Karisma hotels. I called Aunt Phyllis on my way home to tell her that we should book one for our upcoming group trip. I think they will really like them.

Like they say, "all good things must come to an end!"

Day 3

Welcome Drink at Farewell Dinner

Show Cooking

Our yummiest dessert!

Training
We had 4 hours of classroom training, which was conducted by Nanda from Karisma. We went over the room and hotel descriptions in depth. They served us cookies, pastries and sandwiches as well as a variety of beverages. It was getting pretty warm in the room, so we took a short break while they adjusted the air. The Lomas Travel Rep came and spoke to us regarding Karisma weddings. Those can get a bit complicated, but she is very thorough and we really don't need to know all of the specifics because they are there to assist our clients. Lastly, Miguel from Lomas came in to talk to us about the Riviera Maya and tours that Lomas has to offer. We wrapped up by filling out a couple of surveys and they gave us a Karisma purse holder and certificate (but my name was spelled wrong). LOL Free Time We had about 4 hours between the end of our class and our farewell dinner. Annemarie picked me up and we went to the Gran Bahia Principe Coba. We had a lot of time to chat in the car and she told me that at her farewell dinner, that the General Manager of the GBP asked her to work as the Rooms Division Manager in the Tulum hotel. She is torn as she already accepted a position at the Blue Bay Grand Esmeralda. Jorge wasn't there because he had to go on leave to have a cyst removed from his head. Then, he decided to go to Las Vegas and I got to talk to him before he left for his trip. He bought a condo at http://www.selvamar.com.mx/. He is also opening up a bathing suit store in Playa Del Carmen with his niece on 10th Avenue. Anne Marie and I joked that everything he touches turns to gold, but it's true! Luis was not there when we arrived. Gerardo said that he left with his "clone," the hotel sub-director. Anne Marie was very upset. If we had known, we would have gone to Playa instead. We had lunch at the Kukulcan buffet and then sat in the lobby and had a cappuccino and talked some more. It was very nice of Anne Marie to drive me all the way back (and it was her last day at the GBP Coba). Bathing suit? LOL No need to worry about which one to wear. There literally was no time!

Farewell Dinner
I had 25 minutes from the time I entered the lobby. I quickly walked through the resort to my room. (Luckily, I had my clothes all ready.) I took a cold shower, because there was no hot water. I threw my clothes on, put on new make-up and was just switching purses when Joann knocked on my door. I was so excited that I was ready.

La Fuente
Dinner was at La Fuente, where they have show cooking. It was a set menu again, and I had to order beef AGAIN! LOL I can't believe they never had chicken as an option. It was always steak or fish (which we all know that I am allergic to). They started with yummy corn muffins, which I love. Then, they ended with Tres Leches and Fresa for dessert, which was served in a Martini glass. We all agreed that it was one of the best desserts. Nanda joined us for dinner and during our dinner conversation, I learned that she knows Luis Ramirez and Jorge Garcia. It's such a small world. (She also knows Noè.)

After Dinner
Some of the group wanted to go to the Martini Bar, but I said only if they serve "Hot Chocolate Martinis" because it's freezing in there! The A/C is cranking. Luckily, Jenna chimed in that she wanted to go to the "swing" bar and that's where they have the nightly entertainment. There was still a breeze from the ocean, which made it a little chilly (although I seemed to be the only one who was). I didn't even order a drink because I was too cold.

The entertainment started with a live band and then the International show began. We turned in about 10:00 or 10:30 p.m.

Wrapping Up
I went back to the room and packed. Then, I took another jacuzzi now that I knew where to find the button for the jets. Can you believe that it was under the champagne bucket?

This was a very busy and exhausting, but great trip!

I have mucho pounds to take off when I get home!

Free time (we got back much later, so we didn't have as much free time....just enough time to get ready for dinner)

6:30 p.m. - Dinner at El Dorado Royale, Kampai restaurant

Site Visits
The site visits were amazing. Our guide for the day was Miguel from Lomas Travel. We had a huge bus taking us around.

El Dorado Seaside Suites
This hotel is beautiful and intimate (280 Jr. Suites in 2 & 3 story buildings). All Jr. Suites have a jacuzzi. All suites are non-smoking. Perfect for those who want to get away from it all. The rooms are almost identical to the El Dorado Maroma, but a lighter color wood. The beach beds are very nice. The water is so blue and clear. I liked the flair of the Mexican restaurant and the outdoor swing bar.

Hidden Beach Resort Au Natural Club
This is a 42 Suite boutique hotel that is clothing optional. I can't imagine why anyone would want this option, especially the nude breakfast, lunch & dinner options. That's one way to assure that I don't over-indulge! They have access to the restaurants at the El Dorado Seaside Suites next door, but they must be attired. One nice feature of this resort is that it can be taken over for groups (but I would hope that they would disinfect first).

After witnessing Hedonism, I had no idea to check out the beach, but Jenna did!

Azul Fives
Can I just say that I can't believe that we didn't have to wear hard hats. You should have seen what we had to walk through. That would never fly in the U.S.

This hotel is going to be EP or AI and it is just beautiful. It is very chic and they took a lot of pride in picking out the furnishings. It is very upscale and when they extend 5th Avenue, it will be right on it. The suites are oversized and luxurious like an apartment with a kitchen, dining area, and powder room. The Penthouse Suite is the coolest feature because a group of friends can stay there and then you have access to the private rooftop where you can enjoy the views or have a BBQ. A private chef is also available for in room dining. Azul Fives is great for groups or your upscale clientele who want be be close to Playa Del Carmen.

El Dorado Maroma
Another nice, intimate resort (only 72 suites) for those 16 years and older. All suites face the beach. (My favorite section was the Mi Hotelito section, which is less contemporary and has a Mexican flair.) Maroma Beach was rated the "world's best beach" by the Travel Channel. It is very beautiful and the sand is so soft and white. It's located near the marina with activities close by. Beach Butlers are available to provide suntan lotion, reading materials, cool towels, and gourmet bites throughout the day. There are 3 restaurants.

Lunch was very delicious and we ate too much again.

Azul Beach
Guess who I ran into?....Noè Landau, former Rooms Division Manager from Azul Blue. Now he is the RDM at Azul Beach. What a pleasant surprise! I thought he went to Mi Hotelito, which is now The El Dorado Maroma.

I was very impressed by this hotel. It reminded me a lot of Azul Blue. It is a small boutique style and everyone knows you. It is also great for kids. The pools are very basic, but Bahia Petempich beach is very nice. At Azul Beach, they also offer Beach Butler service (and Mario, the Beach Butler was mighty fine). I thought the rooms were small and the bathroom did not have enough room to get ready, but the other features outweigh this one negative. There are only 98 rooms.

They offer childrens menus and gourmet Gerber baby food. They even have strollers, play pens, and other baby necessities, so you don't have to worry about bringing them.

They offer the South Beach diet menu and a whole lobster menu. Some culinary activities that are unique to this resort are the picnics, fish market, paella party and beach BBQ.

The Agavero Tequila Lounge offers many tequilas served on a frozen bar top, which is a very cool feature.

La Mancha Energy Bar offers fruit juices, smoothies, cappuccinos, cookies, ice cream and sandwiches. This is a fun place for kids to order on their own.

The size of this resort makes it very easy for everyone to get to know each other and it makes it easy to keep track of the kids. There's even a pool for the kids.

Azul View
Not open yet, so we watched a video. This one has a great program for teens. It looks very nice.

Azul View will be the first multi-generational hotel with an abundance of room categories (and guaranteed connecting rooms). There will be 438 luxury suites.

There will be a kids club with a splash park, a great teen club (which is a big advantage and is unique to this hotel) and adults only restaurant, a Mojito bar, and Family and friends vacation planner services.

Wireless
Could not log in because they gave me a wrong user ID. It is just not worth it, so no photos till I get home. I know that is boring.

Claudia
I discovered that Claudia from Azul Blue was working in Reception at The El Dorado Royale. She is the one who is very beautiful.

Dinner
Everyone was going to the Oriental, but I was really nervous that I would have an allergic reaction, so I opted not to go.

La Isla
The Italian restaurant had an hour and a half wait, so I went to the Mediterranean, La Isla. It was delcioso! I had the flank steak that was the most tender piece of meat I ever had. I also had the Creme Brulee' for dessert and it was just like the one I had at Azul Blue. Yum-o!

The waiter kept calling me "Princess." He must be confusing me with the little girl who was at Azul Blue! Remember her, Gina?

Jacuzzi
Guess where I am going now?

Morning
It was a very eventful day from the beginning. As I was driving to the airport, I heard on the radio that the Chicago area had an earthquake that registered 5.4. That is just crazy! Last week there was a cougar running around. Do we blame it on Global Warming? LOL

Forever in Blue
I thought this quote was appropriate. When I opened my book, "The Fourth Summer of the Sisterhood" to read it at the airport, it said, "And she flies. And she is everywhere." -- Nick Drake

The second quote was also appropriate: "The only true paradise is paradise lost." -- Marcel Proust

Flight
My seat assignment on the plane was the last row, window seat, but at the airport, they assigned me a new seat.....11C aisle. Someone was in it and the Flight Attendant had to ask him to move. Who would sit in someone else´s seat? We got off late due to a problem with one of the bathrooms. I was just going to pass out Immodium to everyone so that we could move on. There was a lot of turbulence throughout the flight.

There were 3 of us on the flight from Chicago....another lady from Elmhurst and a guy from Kansas City.

Jo Jo's
The three of us were starving and went to Jo Jo's for lunch. It overlooks the ocean and is open air. I had ribs and they were very good. I also ordered a Raspberry Colada (which was very good) and ended up drinking three because the waiter kept bringing new ones.

AGENDA - Friday, April 18
Arrive Cancun
Transfer to El Dorado Royale
6:30 p.m. - Site Inspection at El Dorado Royale
7:00 p.m. - Dinner at El Dorado Royale, Cocotal Restaurant

Room
My room is amazing (#5324)! I have a nice view of the pool and ocean. The furnishings are very nice and there is a huge jacuzzi tub in the corner and a hammock on the balcony. I can't use my laptop till tomorrow because I have to use the lobby at the casita suites. So, no pictures yet.

El Dorado Royale Tour
We toured some of the casita rooms and the Presidential suite tonight....just amazing! You will have to see the pictures. Some of the best rooms I have seen. The casitas are like a hotel within a hotel and they get special treatment such as WiFi and Beach Butlers.

The beds and pillows are very comfy. The air conditioning is either freezing or warm. It was sometimes hard to find a happy medium and it comes out the top of the closet and blows on your head while you're sleeping. There is no A/C for vent in the bathroom, which is odd. It can get humid. The hotel is large, but it's not too large to walk the whole resort. There are shuttles as well, but the one fault I had wit the shuttle service was that they showed favortism to guests in the casita suites. If you weren't in a casita, you might have to wait for a few shuttles. It's almost broken out into sections. You can always find somewhere private. Even the standard rooms are very nice at the El Dorado Royale. The food was definitely gourmet.

The lobby is air conditioned and you are welcomed with a glass of Champagne. There are a few stores and an Internet room.

The grounds are very pretty. The beach does have sand bags to prevent erosion, but I think they look like whales! The water is bright, Caribbean blue.

Attendees
Tammy is the General Manager who joined us. Then there are the following Travel Agents besides myself:
  1. Jay French, President of Ultimate Cruise & Vacation - Shawnee, KS
  2. Joanne Geraci, Horizon Travel, Elmhurst, IL
  3. Jorgie Walker, Gateway Cruise & Travel, Inc., Arvada, CO
  4. Jenna Belec, Gateway Cruise & Travel, Inc., Arvada, CO
  5. Karen, Morris Murdock, St. George, UT
  6. Mary, Morris Murdock, St. George, UT
  7. Pam, Thomas Travel, Tooele, UT
  8. Tammy Heitsman, Funjet Vacations, Denver, CO
Jenna (the youngest one out of the bunch....she is only 20) thought I was 25 years old! Maybe I will give her a business card for For Eyes.

We all had a very nice dinner (ate way too much). Tammy thought that Jay, Joann and I new each other because we were already so chummy. The whole group gets along really well.

We went to the Martini Bar after dinner and it was mucho frio. I wanted a hot chocolate and NOT a chocolate martini. I actually ordered a Kahlua and Cream and Georgie ordered a shot of Tequila and we all thought she was joking, but she wasn't! I think she is the oldest out of our group.

Bed Time
We were all exhausted after a long day, plus Saturday's schedule begins at 8:30 a.m., so we called it a night. We are all in the same building (or next to each other).
My room was much frio, so I turned the air almost completely off and slept with one robe on and the other over me.
